I don't put much "church talk" on this blog. Today is church talk. But I think this is something all churches are going to have to deal with soon, regardless of creed or denomination. On her blog this week Judy Thomas summarized what Scot McKnight said about Reaching the Next Generation at the Zoe Nashville conference this year. If you have ever had a problem explaining to your parents why the church of their youth isn't meeting the needs or holding up to the questions and challenges of this generation, this would be a good place to start. That first list is a hard list to read. But when you read the second list, the wisdom shines through. Now go talk amongst yourselves....

Stephanie, This is amazing! Just a few weeks ago we found ourselves having to be on the defense of the church we have chosen (of course, it was our parents not understanding why the type of church they go to is not o.k. for us, a family with young children) Thank you for this link. It is very helpful and insightful. It helps just to know we are not the only ones!
Amee I DO go to church with my parents(as you know) but still... It is hard to explain why some traditions ring empty, why priorities have changed, and why the things that seemed to work in 1968 don't work in 2008. I think this generation gap may be the largest it has ever been. :) I bet i would like your church!
My parents don't even go to church where they raised us. Times are a changing. The Holy Spirit is moving and awakening churches. In my opinion, churches that resist this will not thrive in today's society. If we let the Spirit truly empower us, we can reach across any generational gap of any kind. God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Just my 2 cents.
If we are approaching end times, like many believe, then we should expect to see the evil in the world gaining power (Satan's last ditch effort). This means the power of God will strengthen as well. The end-times church would have to utilize the increased power of the Holy Spirit, not hinder it, to be effective.
Whew. Sorry about the preaching. :)
Peace and love...
